Piaget Games in Africa
Piaget's concepts of conservation of matter are being explored by HCC students in South Africa during the winter session Natural Science and Safety course being taught in South Africa by Prof Eileen O'Donnell.
Equal amounts of liquid are poured into two identical containers. The liquid in one container is then poured into a different shaped cup, such as a tall, thin cup or a short, wide cup. Children are then asked which cup holds the most liquid. Despite seeing that the liquid amounts were equal, children in the pre operational stage of development almost always choose the cup that appears fuller. Why not try it yourself?
Piaget conducted a number of similar experiments on conservation of number, length, mass, weight, volume, and quantity. He found that few children showed any understanding of conservation prior to the age of five.
