HCC's Food for Thought Fair
Thanks for attending and discussing the Food For Thought Fair. It was great to have you all there. Our hope is that you take away some important ways to make yourself healthier and to make healthy eating fun for young children.
The Food for Thought Fair was fantastic and so interactive for my students! It was truly one of the best learning experiences for them and the lesson plans that accompanied the activities truly opened my student's eyes to the Performance Standards and how to connect them to lessons! Great job...Kudos to all for a tremendous learning experience!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kathy. We would love for your students to post any of their insights or favorite activities from the fair.
ReplyDeleteI loved attending this workshop! There were so many hands on things to see and participate in. All of the activities were very interesting. My favorite was the cracker station where we made a face using either Nutella, peanut butter, or cream cheese to match our skin tone, and sesame seeds for eyes. It helped me see that there really are so many inexpensive activities you can do with children that they will really enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThe fair was fantastic! It was a great hands-on experience. The materials in the folder were great as well! A lot of these activities are simple to come up with and fun to do with kids. There were a variety of things being taught in the lessons incorporated with healthy eating, like math, reading, it taught them about racial differences, also comparing and contrasting. Overall these activities were great and nutritious. Thank you for a wonderful experience. From Mrs.Chimini's ECE 101
ReplyDeleteMy name is Vanessa Gaie and I'm a student of Ms. Chimini's ECE101 class. This fair was very fun especially the food tasting. It makes cooking more fun by creating things and also makes it easier to encourage a child to eat healthy. For instance, ants on a log. Many children don't like eating vegetables and with creating the food into something could possibly get them to eat it. The face creation was also fun. Projects are always more fun when you know you get to eat it when you finish. These were all hands on and also helped with body parts in regards to the creation of a face. They had to make two eyes, one nose, and possibly an ear.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Simone Davenport. Even though I wasn't able to attend the fair Mrs. Chimini gave each of us a packet of activities. After looking at the activities I noticed all of them were hands-on. My classmates discussed that it was educational, fun, and interesting. After looking through the activities I would have loved to participate in making the butter for muffins. I know these activities will be helpful to me when to me when I'm planning things for kids.
ReplyDeleteYou can make butter at home. Just take real heavy cream or whipping cream. Leave it out for several hours. Then pour an amount about half the size of your container. Close it up tight and shake. First it will become whipped cream and take up all of the container. Keep shaking and eventually it will start to come together. Finally, you will begin to hear and feel the buttermilk separating out. Keep shaking so all the buttermilk separates. Pour it off. What is left is butter.
DeleteI am a member of Mrs. Chimini's ECE 101 class, I did not attend the event, but Mrs. Chimini gave me a packet from the event and showed me photos. There were great and innovative ways to get students involved on eating healthier. The centers were great and now that I know that such things exist, like zuccinni bread I will be researching new and more healthier options to make not only my life healthier but any of my prospective students. Thank you.

As a student of Mrs. Chimini's classroom, I really enjoyed joining the Food For Thought Fair because it really showed ways to eat healthy by using activities for children. When you teach them through activities and hands on projects they really learn how to do things the right way. The activity that i enjoyed the most was making the butter, I think that it was pretty cool how when you shake the container it turned into butter and the butter separated itself from all the other materials inside of the container. Going through each station it really showed me that children can learn through activities. Thank You!

After attending your food fair i thought that it was pretty interesting. I enjoyed that there were tables that had different food ideas. For example the table with the fruit kebabs, that was used for teaching patterns. It was shocking to me how good the zucchini bread was, using apple sauce instead of oils. This workshop opened my eyes to many ideas on how to educate children about healthy eating.

even though i was unable to attend, Mrs. Chimini was able to provide me with a packet explaining the goal and performance standards for food for thought. Food for thought made me realize how simple materials in our everyday lives have positive affects on the development of children and encourages them on small motor activities. math, science and visual discrimination are all a major part of activities that was being introduced to the children. the 5 senses were being used throughout all the different stations showed me that this is the way children learns. it was a great opportunity to gain valuable information and opened my eyes to the development of children and how effective it really is.
ReplyDeleteNathaniel Ambrose I love the experience at the workshop it was really fun learning all different types of food and the thing i love about it is trying to mix cream into butter, make your own trail mix, sampling guacamole and hummus, ants on a log, sampling zucchini bread, the smelling of different types of food scents and it will help children because its more hands on than ever and children will be able to do math, artwork, science with the activities and will help them do their work and they will figure out how to solve problems by doing this and i'm in Mrs. Chimini ECCE class.
ReplyDeleteThe food for thought fair was very well planned out, and it had great activities for children. The activities they had planed out were entertaining but also educational. My favorite one was the cheerio station. I learned that making necklaces works on your small motor skills, and works out your fingers and helps little kids learn how to hold the pencil the right way. Also it's a very healthy snack if they get a little hungry. My second favorite station was the hummus vs avocado station because i got to try something new, i tried the pita chips and i also tried hummus for the very first time and i actually liked it. It's a good activity for children because it opens up their taste to new things, and they can explore what they like and don't and compare the different taste and texture. The stations taught balance, health, and worked on their balanced healthy meals all while having fun with it.

I am so glad you were brave enough to taste something new!
DeleteWhile being a student in an early childhood class,From what i hear from my fellow classmates the activities done during the Food for Thought was a helpful opportunity and an insight to personally see why and how physical activities benefits young children during there child development. I feel as thought it would be a perfect way to incorporate these healthy learning habits when you become a parent in the future. Its good to know what healthy foods to feed a young child so they grow up to maintain them.
ReplyDeleteI am a student of Mrs, Chimini's class of ECE101 and thought the activities were extremely helpful. The variety of different hands on ways to learn math and science while eating healthy was very informative. For instance, the fruit kababs which showed how to make a pattern with different fruit on a skewer and have a healthy snack when they are done. I truly enjoyed seeing this workshop and feel that it will be very helpful in the future in planning different activities for pre-school children. Thank you so much for this opportunity
ReplyDeleteThe fair taught me that you can have fun and learn something at the same time. While going around to different stations and trying different varieties of foods, i was still able to learn something at every station that i visited. Some of the unusual things that i learned opened my eyes as to in order to learn new things sometimes you have to go out and experience new things. Such as using apple sauce instead of oils like in the zucchini bread. Overall i enjoyed my experience and definitely would want to attend again. Thank you for the experince, from Mrs.Chiminis ECE 101

There was a lot of hands on work that i thought was very helpful with children and this fair made me realize that food that i thought looked, and smelled nasty was good and healthy for me . 3 soft drinks contain 40 packets of sugar. It is enough to make you start drinking water!!

By reading the package I like how they are very organize when it comes to do activities. I also think by doing those activities it will encourage kids to be more focus in every activities and I also think it's a good way to distract them.
ReplyDeleteI am a student in Ms.Chimini ECE 101 class and I thought the Food for Thought Fair was amazing because it showed me different activities that you can do with the children that shows development skills. The activities were amazing especially the one with making the cheerio necklace, when the lady explained what children can and can't do with their fingers at such a young age that activity helps them more with the muscles in their hands which is small motor. It was a lot of hands on activities that is very great for children to do and they were very interesting. All of the information that I got from each activity was great because it explains everything about the activity and what it helps the child do and how it helps the child. It was a great time there and I enjoyed it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the wide variety of activities that incorporated the use of food and placed emphasis on healthy eating habits. This allowed me to have a hand on experience while learning about lesson plans that could be incorporated in a classroom environment. My favorite activity from the fair would have to be making our own trail mix. This activity made use of a variety of healthy ingredients to create an energy packed snack. I was very happy to attend the event and learned so much.

Although the Morning Glory muffins are not low calorie, they are packed with nutritious fruits, vegetables and proteins (nuts). Being able to replace all the oils with applesauce in any bakery item makes it all the more healthy.
DeleteHello! My name is Zemima and I am a student of Mrs. Chimini's Early Child Care at Central High School. Although I did not attend the fair at Housatonic, I received a packet from my teacher and I think it's important that young children should know that there are healthy snacks that can be delicious. I like the "Ants on a Log" activity because I always make that snack whenever I babysit and the children enjoy it very much.
ReplyDeleteThis fair was a good opportunity for children to personally see and hear about healthy nutrition. Based on what I've heard from my classmates and teacher, the fair was very well thought out and organized incorporating math and science concepts.
Hello! My name is Alyssa, I'm a student in Mrs. Chimini's Early Childhood Education class. I enjoyed my experience at the Food For Thought Fair. The fair was very well planned out, that made the activities both educational and entertaining. Every activity included a lesson plan that listed all the skills and abilities the children would develop such as using small motor skills, patterns, math, identifying different grains and much more. I learned a lot from the fair and how to educate young children in a way where they will stay interested and satisfied.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the Food For Thought Fair. I learned a lot about healthy food choices for children. I loved how there were multiple stations with a variety of foods to try.
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Yogebeth Arias. I am a student of Mrs. Chimini's early childhood education class. For a young adult seeking a career that involves aiding children, attending Housatonic Community College’s Food for Thought Fair was an outstanding learning experience. It was incredibly clever to add the apple sauce in replacement of the oils in the zucchini bread. Creating patterns with fruits is an excellent way to enable children to use their mathematical skills and eat healthy at the same time. My favorite center was the station in which we were to make bracelets and necklaces using Cheerios as beads. I was amazed at the reality that a child would sincerely face when participating in an activity such as this one, due to the status of the development of his or her small motor skills. I appreciate and admire the Housatonic Community College for granting me this spectacular opportunity and teaching me all the extraordinary lesson plans I can accumulate for children to eat healthy.
